@TheStig - So sorry to hear about the trouble! It doesn't look like we have any testing data on this exact device. Having said that, it does look like the reader has been compatible with each of the older generations of this phone model. Have you already had a chance to check out these troubleshooting steps?
I am having the same problem with my new LG G5. After plugging in the reader it tries to establish a secure connection and then just hangs. I've done all the trouble shooting things - latest version of android, uninstall and reinstall square app, making sure reader is fully charged, closing app & reloading, etc. Nothing works. My old swipe reader still works, but I'm getting tired of the emails chastising me for swiping chip cards. Any chance Square is going to test the G5 soon? The previous LG G# series phones have all been supported.
I have a IPhone 5C the chip reader was working fine for a long time. Now the last five ties I have tried to use it ,it will not work. I went through all the help, and still nothing. Thebluetooth onthe phone says it is connected, but the square app does not show it. Seems like a security issue to me.
Make sure you update your square app. The latest version 4.54.3 fixes a bug introduced by the new iOS 10.2 update relating to Bluetooth connectivity issues.
My issue is with the chip/swipe reader which plugs into the headset port, not the bluetooth version. (LG G5 running latest Android update and Square version).

Did all that and it still does not work.
Sorry for the trouble. If you're using the plug-in Chip Card Reader, check out these troubleshooting specifics that usually help resolve issue:
I ended up getting the square contactless and haven't had any problems since. I think the problem with the other device was the headphone jack. Since this new reader connects through the square app and I don't have to plug anything into the headphone jack, I haven't had any issues.
