Is there a way to identify a company as customer?

I do business with individuals, but I also do business with companies. There is a company field in the customer profile, but Square won't let me save a new customer record if the "last name" field is empty. I need to be able to create a customer record using only the company name.

This customer-company should appear in the customer directory like any other customer record, and should be searchable (by company name) just like searching for a person's name.

I'm sure I'm not the first Square user who has companies as customers. It would be fine to include a person's name as point of contact, but the record should be listed under the company name.

I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks so much, as always.

Definitely a Feature Request we're happy to track. Typically have Sellers put in business name in as the name on the profile.  But we'll definitely source this to the Directory team.

Thanks for that response. Definitely this is an important feature. Sure, I can put the company name in the "customer last name" field, and that will work. But it would always be a workaround. To be honest, it should be a pretty easy tweak to show customers in the directory by company name if that field is filled.

Another, even easier solution, would be to change the label over the "last name" field to "last name or company name". Just a suggestion.

Thanks so much for a great service.

Great suggestions all around. Happy to pass them to the directory team. Especially the last name/company.

I agree that the company name should be listed in the customer directory. It should be the default filter. This is basic and common sense. It is very inconvenient especially if you are not familiar with which customer belongs to what company.
