Is there a way to apply sales tax to an item being sold as an event?

We sell as lot of workshops tickets. I have in the past sold them as an "item". I love the features offered when listing an item as an "event" ie - it includes date and location. However it won't tax the event. How are others listing their workshops that include merchandise?
