Is is possible to apply a set amount on your square reader, so a device isn't needed in the sale?

Hi Everyone, 

I am just wondering if it is possibe to set up the square reader so that it is always ready to accept a set payment ($5 for example) without the need to type anything into a device. Also, Is a device required to make a sale?

there is not a way to automatically charge a set amount.  and a device is needed to charge a card, the reader is a "dumb device" and simply reads the card and passes that information cryptographically to the iPhone or other devices.
