Image quality in store?

The images in my store look blurry on the product page? When you click on the image a window pops up with the clear image, but the thumbnail image that shows the product looks aweful. I have looked at the help topic which tells you which image size to use for items and adjusted the image size - but the smaller image looks even worse. Any ideas?

I notice that the thumbnails on my mobile are rather blurry, but the ones on my pc look fine. When I first started looking at the store is said that 720 x 720 was the optimal image size but I've been using 800 x 800 as it seems a bit clearer.

Our original photos are both profile and landscapes (we are painters). Is there a way to format the photo online images that allows the customer to see the entire piece of art and also click to enlarge without being blurry?
