How to put an item on sale

I am brand new to square and I have searched the internet and quite seem to find my answer.  I want some items to ring up 50% off.  I can only find a way to do it manually on the register by apply discount button.  I can't seem to find a way to enter a list price and a sale price. (I also carry a ton of items that have a suggest list price and my price).  Say a customer buys 10 different promotional items I have to manually swipe each item to have it ring 50% off?  thanks in advance
