How to make shipping and delivery feature more intuitive?

I'm currently building an E-Commerce website for a business that will ship boxes to those who order outside my area but will have free delivery for those inside the delivery zone. I'm afraid if I make Shipping the default during checkout, customers who live inside the delivery zone will not know to switch the fulfillment method to delivery. I'm also afraid that if Delivery is the default, then someone who lives outside of the area will enter their invalid address and not realize that they need to switch to Shipping. 

 

Is there a current solution that will make the customer experience less confusing? For instance, when a customer proceeds to checkout, can you have a pop up box that asks for their zip code and then directs them to Delivery or Shipping based on their zip code? I'm also open to other ideas to solve this.

Welcome to the Community! 

 

Do you have these shipping rules set up in your Online Store already? It will allow you to set up a delivery zone for the customer areas you choose. 

 

If you choose the radius for the Delivery Zone it will automatically tell the customer they are outside of the zone, they cannot get it delivered.
