How do you push the button on the square reader when it is in the dock (to re-pair with an iPad)?

We're using the Square contactless reader in a dock with an iPad and it works great.

However, when the iPad is moved away or the reader is not used for a period of time, such as overnight, then they have to be re-paired to get "Reader Ready" to be displayed again.

Re-pairing them requires the dock to be dismantled so that the button on the reader can be pressed and held until the four orange lights come on. Then the reader can be put back in the dock and the dock re-assembled again.

Is there any other way to maintain the pairing or to re-pair without taking the dock apart each time?

Alternatively, if I drill a hole in the front of the dock so that I can stick a straightened paper clip through the hole to push the button on the reader, will drilling the hole damage anything inside the dock?

Thanks!

Solution

The reader should be plugged in at all times when in the dock.  This will prevent it from sleeping.  The iPad will reconnect automatically.  Very rarely do you have to manually reconnect it.  If you do most of the time all you have to do is select it in the Bluetooth settings.

If you are finding yourself having to reconnect it constantly press and hold the power button on the reader for 20-30 seconds to do a hard reset.

In your Bluetooth setting on your iPad select, it and select forget device.  Then repair.  This should fix your issue.
