How do I get money from gift cards?

We have been loving the gift card thing, but now that it has been several months, I was wondering how exactly do we get the money from the card.  Is it when someone buys the card or is it when it gets spent? I have not been able to find an answer to this on Squareup.com.

you received the money the next business day after the card was purchased.  so if they buy on January 5 and don't use till July 5 you had their money for 6 months.
