Does Square allow me to pay per-piece compensated employees, plus tips?

My delivery drivers get paid per pound, plus tips - can Square Payroll accommodate this?

Good question, @beckersuz

You are able to pay employees via commission through Square Payroll, and I think this would work for that. This allows you to put in a dollar amount to send to your employees in place of, or in addition to, a typical hourly salary.

If your employees are paid in tips separately, Square Payroll allows you to declare taxes on amounts already paid to your employees as well.

Hope that helps. Let us know if you have any other questions.

Thanks Spenser - I love the new payroll column features and customizability, but wanted to circle back to this idea of per piece compensation as another option you could add to the payroll columns.  The workaround you suggested above has definitely gotten the job done.  However, it would be good for my employees to see how many pounds they are being compensated for.  In addition, they receive a set amount of compensation for any stop they make in which the customer and/or their laundry is not available.

So what would work for us would be to add:

piece_rate_1

piece_rate_1_amt

piece_rate_2

piece_rate_2_amt

And certainly these columns could be hidden like any others.

Thanks!

Oooo.  This thread is 3 yrs old, and I don't see an option yet to pay by the piece in Square Payroll.

Am I missing something?

Would like to know if there is a way that I can enter/create a payroll payment type other than hourly or salary. I pay by the piece. And I pay weekly. Thanks.

Hi @CIBSourdough - thanks for reaching out and checking in on this Feature Request!

No shareable update for us on this one, just yet. Our Product Teams are still in the process of making large-cut changes to Payroll options. As soon as we have more info to share, we will bounce back here and let you know. We appreciate your patience!

Flat rate commission is still considered a feature request, @CindyN + @CIBSourdough.

So I've searched and I'm still not seeing any updates on this.

I have employees that are hourly but will get a per-head commission on certain items. I see in the original reply that you said, "You are able to pay employees via commission through Square Payroll, and I think this would work for that. This allows you to put in a dollar amount to send to your employees in place of, or in addition to, a typical hourly salary." The problem is, HOW? I have used Square for several years and am just now getting into the employee/scheduling/payroll end and I hate to say I am a bit disappointed. There are no instructions on HOW to perform tasks or HOW to make changes or HOW to pay my employees via commission which would allow me to put in a dollar amount (when % is the only option I have seen ANYWHERE) in place of or in addition to a typical hourly pay. So, it's great that you are offering a solution, but go a step further and include step-by-step instructions on how to make it happen. Not everyone is a Square guru and quite honestly Square needs to offer some instruction if I am going to pay for their payroll services. While I can appreciate the thought behind a community support forum, no one has time to spend hours searching through hundreds of pages of possible answers and not finding anything.

Hi @CindyN,

Thank you for writing in, and sorry about the frustrating experience trying to set up commissions. We have help center articles with step-by-step guides to set up commissions, but I understand it's not always easy finding the right resources to get started. At this time, you can set up a commission rate only  based on a percentage, and not on a dollar amount. Here's how to get started:

  1. In your Dashboard, head to Team > Commissions
  2. Select whether you'd like to set up commissions for item sales, or services.
  3. Choose whether you'd like to set up a flat rate, or tiered commission structure. You can also add details like costs to be deducted, for example taxes, or processing fees. Select Continue to get to the next step.
  4. Assign the commission rates to your team members and select Continue.
  5. Choose a date for the Commissions to go into effect, or backdate them if applicable and click Save once you're done.

In case you need to find an article with step by step instructions in the future, take a look at our Help Center, where you can select a subject, e.g Team Management, and find guides and FAQs about that subject. Our support team can also help you out further if you're stuck!

I hope this was helpful, and please don't hesitate to reach out with any other questions 🙂

Thanks for the reply. However, you just told me what I already knew about commissions. The question I asked is how can I have commissions based on a flat rate (dollar amount) and NOT percentages. Is there a workaround - a way to make it happen as stated in the original reply.  How do I make, "You are able to pay employees via commission through Square Payroll, and I think this would work for that. This allows you to put in a dollar amount to send to your employees in place of, or in addition to, a typical hourly salary." it happen? Based on your current reply, I am going to just assume that the answer given above is bogus, it really doesn't allow you to put in a dollar amount to send to my employees in place of or in addition to a typical hourly salary. If that is the case, I will not be able to use it as I hoped. I am truly disappointed as I thought I had found in Square a one-stop shop to meet all my business needs.

Oh, and I read the FAQ's and searched the help center for days before posting. The information you have on setting up commissions is nothing more than what you posted earlier. I looked at it a dozen times trying to click on everything available to see if I had missed something.

Oh well. Back to the drawing board.
