Square allows me to create 4 types of discounts:
But Square only allows me to apply the fixed percent discount per item. Everything else has to be applied to the total sale.
Why? Why? Why?
If I want to give a customer half off, or $5 off, the price of a particular item, I cannot ring that up in a way that shows which exact item was discounted.
(Yes, I know there is a workaround. I can apply the discount to the whole sale and then remove it, one by one, from the items I don’t want the discount to be applied to). That’s a ridiculous hack. And it only works in some situations.
I also can’t create a 1% or a $1 discount and apply it multiple times to get to my desired amount. That would be at least a little bit helpful.
What possible reason could there be for allowing me to apply a fixed discount but not a variable discount to a single item? Square staff, please tell me.
And please don’t say "I can see how this would be helpful". That’s the Square version of "thoughts and prayers". Reading through this forum, I find people requesting this since at least 2016.
Can one of your technical managers please tell me, why create all these discount options and then severely limit how we can use them?
My frustration is building daily.
Just a quick thought and fyi I'm not even sure this would remotely work, but would using rewards or something to do with loyalty help? I bet you could make a reward/coupon for each item and then simply apply it (ie. give it) to the customer and the order right there at the terminal. I might be wrong, but it was just a quick thought.
And, if this is really an important strategy for you - we're an official Square Partner (we specialize in pre-built solutions and mobile apps) and can easily make you a custom Square Terminal (pretty affordably) for iPads or Androids where you can do this.
Here's a glimpse of how deeply we're integrated with Square:
