Create Coupon without a Square Online Sstore

I created my item  to sale via the Square Dashboard in the items library.  I do not want to create a Square Online store. How can I create a coupon for the item for sale online without creating the store. I already created a discount for the item in the dashboard it did not work when I tested it out. Please help. What do I do.

I've done what the video says to do and this video has not helped me so I can give something off to people who purchase an item. I've wasted so much of my time with this that I have been looking into using another platform for my sales since it is nearly impossible to get an answer and help on something that should be fairly quick and simple. At this point the amount reading up on and videos do get a discount code to work is costing me time and money.

Discounts created in Dashboard/POS can't be applied to items in checkout links. You'll need to create coupons from your Online Store editor. @Valentina gives a best answer on how to set this up. 

I understand this may not be the answer you're looking for (sorry about that), but it's the only way to use coupons with checkout links.
