Can the new black Square Register use a barcode scanner with the POS system?

I bought the new Square Register to use a barcode scanner with the ability to create barcodes and I am having trouble figuring out how to make this work. It still says that the Square Register does not have the capability to use the Square for Retail app on the register but does show that it is compatible with barcode scanners. How does that make sense?

Currently, the Square Register runs a version of Square Point of Sale.  It does not work with Square for Retail.  However, you can use a barcode scanner if your items have a number in the SKU field.  This can be a custom number or a manufacturer's UPC.  I don't use Square for retail but from what I understand you can use the enhanced inventory features via the dashboard like creating and printing barcodes.   I personally just us a Dymo printer to create my barcodes but I don't have that many either.
