For a while now I have been unable to change an item's "stock received" to zero in inventory history. It just goes right back to the original number. I can change it to another number but not zero.
Why did this start happening and when is Square going to fix it?
This is a very urgent issue as the holidays are coming up. I need to reconcile dozens and dozens of items to ensure our inventory count is correct.
Note: I will NOT do an inventory recount and I will NOT upload a new inventory spreadsheet because quantities become recounts. Recounts cannot be edited, which defies logic, and that fact has messed up hundreds of my inventory items permanently.
@JLSGLG I am having trouble getting exactly what you are wanting the system to do. The inventory recount is exactly what you are saying you need which is you count what is on the shelf and put it in the system.
Are you saying you have entered the inventory incorrectly and want to correct the amount received?
This would still be an inventory recount. If you could change the inventory received to 0 without any type of accountability it would compromise the integrity of the system for inventory control. I could see that someone could just 0 the inventory received and steal the items and you would be no wiser on the reporting side. If you have 20 items received and need to take those 20 items out you could do them as damage or loss unless you are actively using those. Otherwise the recount is your best bet.
I NEED SOMEONE FROM SQUARE TO READ THIS POST FULLY. THE IMPLICATIONS OF NOT BEING ABLE TO CHANGE STOCK RECEIVED TO ZERO HAS HUGE IMPLICATIONS. Yes, it's long but, Square, you clearly don't understand why the change to not being able to change inventory to zero completely screws up every single reporting number.
We have always been able to change stock received to zero until recently. I need to go back in time to edit historical data so my COGS is correct. Recounts do their own weird math to determine the cost of the items you are reducing or adding. Unless your item is the exact same price every single time, which doesn’t happen for anyone, all recounts do is mess up your COGS. You and Square’s math team doesn’t seem to understand this so let me explain the very large implications of not being able to edit my inventory in the way I need to.
I received (1) unit of a particular item three times this year. The first and second unit both cost $15.50. The third unit cost $9. Each time these were entered as (1) item received. One of the first $15.50 units was accidently entered twice. We sold all three items. Our COGS now says three items were sold with a $15.50 cost and we have (1) remaining at $9. I need to change the stock received for one of those $15.50 items to ZERO so both my COGS and in stock amount is correct. A recount will either remove the $9 item or give the removed item some random cost Square auto-calculates. In either case, my COGS is currently, and will continue to be incorrect.
Now multiply that problem by thousands of items and thousands of dollars for various reasons. This is not a minor problem. (I shouldn’t have to explain why there are so many problems with our inventory and why we need a recount. But so that you and Square can get a sense of our reality, 90% of our items do not come with SKUs. We have to create them on our own and sticker each item individually. This can get very confusing. We also have reorganized and had a lot of problems with shipments, so items were returned or not received.)
Finally, it's not Square's job is to police my inventory. Their job is to give me the ability to manage my own inventory on their platform and create reports that give me an accurate picture of my revenue, taxes, and COGS. They are failing to do those things. My COGS are totally screwed up because of t arbitrary and broken rules.
At the same time, I pay Square monthly yet there is no way for me to charge a bag tax. (The people who use Square for free can charge a bag tax.) Square’s solution? Create a new item and charge the bag tax that way. The bag tax is a TAX I give to the government the exact same way I remit sales tax. It is not an item that is sold and taxed. It is not revenue that shows up my sales reports or my 1099-K. It is not revenue that is reported on my quarterly state taxes or my annual federal taxes. But, nonetheless, these are the things that will happen if I do what Square is telling me to do. It’s completely F’d that they can’t give me the ability to create a bag tax in accordance with local tax laws, they are worried about me going back in time and change my stock received to zero? It makes NO sense. Both recounts and charging a bag tax as a sale give me an inaccurate view of my sales, revenue, COGS, profit margin, inventory count, and the sales tax that I collected. ALL OF THESE ARE WRONG if I can’t change stock received to zero and charge a TAX as a sale.
And who the hell is changing my inventory to zero and stealing it? Only me and the woman who enters my inventory have those permissions.
My anger and frustration at Square literally affects my sleep.
We are counting our inventory right now and the fact that Square removed our ability to change "inventory received" in our inventory history to 0 is seriously f*cking everything. Our inventory count is incorrect, our calculation of inventory on hand is inflated. Can you PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let us change inventory received to zero again?
Square is an inventory management software. LET ME MANAGE MY INVENTORY!
And stop ignoring me. I need help! So do a ton of other businesses out there complaining about this on other threads.
