Can I exchange my contactless and chip reader with a chip reader?

Can I exchange my contactless and chip reader with a chip reader?  At least half the time I use the reader it will not connect with my phone.  I can use it for a transaction and then five minutes later it will not connect. At this rate, I am going to stop using it and go back to the old mag reader.
