Applying a RARE surcharge to custom charges in square.

I'm running a small art gallery in a small tourist town.  Most of our merchandise made up of consigned one-of-a-kind items, so it's really not worth going to the effort of putting every piece of merchandise into Square.

About once every couple of months we have someone who wants something shipped.

Since its a small town,  and we don't ship much, dealing with UPS or FedEX on a regular basis isn't really beneficial.  It's far easier to take most of the stuff to the city Post Office 1/2 block away (there's also no mail delivery here, everything goes to a P.O. box to give you an idea of how small the town is.

What I need to do is set up a shipping surcharge. Since it's really not worth dealing with the major shippers, we just want to do a simple percentage of the total cost.

What we've been doing is calculating that separately and then adding it as a separate line item, but that's a bit inconvenient.

I've read about setting it up as a second tax, which works, but adds the surcharge to every single custom charge.  Since it is rare to actually need the shipping charge,  I'd rather not have to do that, certainly not on nearly every purchase.

Is there any other simple way to set up a simple percentage charge like that?  Or is there a way to set it up as a tax and have it only apply if I go in and apply it?

Hey there, @Kapikui

Nice to see a new face in the Seller Community. Welcome!

You do have another option besides the surcharge to get this shipping costs added to your custom amounts. Surcharges are great, but they have to be attached to an item to show. Unfortunately, it won't show as an option on your Point of Sale checkout without one.

There is the possibility of creating an item with a variable price, so you could enter a custom price whenever you add it to the checkout with the custom amount.

Is that something you would be interested in? Or do you want to keep using the surcharge route?

I will keep an eye out for your reply👀.
