Add barcode to Customer Profile

Is there a way to set up a field in a customer profile that contains a unique barcode associated, which on scanning a barcode brings the customer profile up in the directory?

I would love to see this feature as well.  And it would be great to be able to print that barcode on the receipt and/or on a label that we can stick to our tracking tickets.
