is there a way to stop customers receiving the 'your appointment has been accepted' text and just get the 24hr prior reminder text?
I'm using the free version.

At the moment, there is not a way to completely stop customers from receiving the “appointment accepted” text. If you have “Business must accept or decline all appointment requests turned on. You can go to your calendar, open the appointment, and click "Accept." Once you do that, a window will show up and you can opt out SMS notifications.
