Hi 409995,

Is your tax issue with your your online Square website or your POS or both ?  Selling in person is easier for tax calculations verses selling online.  There's some info here for managing your online taxes.  Note, from our experience with online sales, taxes don't always come out as expected - one can have a state tax plus a county and/or town tax and the local taxes are based on the zip code of the purchaser which may or may not be what you assume they are.  Hopefully others here have more thoughts on this.

@409995 ;

We would need more information on which taxes are not calculating correctly to help as was mentioned by @JK_Fiber_Art.

The only thing I can add is a bunch of states and municipalities have been adding new tax laws and they may not always be accounted for with Online orders.  The other thing is depending where you are there are different Tax laws and requirements.  For example my state's current Tax law, makes it that I only collect Sales tax on items sold in the State of PA or delivered in PA.  So my overall sales might seem like I need to collect X for sales tax but then 30% of X was in PA and 70% was shipped to other states so I do not have to collect it to pay it to other states.

Also you state you have the Right % but do you have all your Taxable Items set to collect Tax, and non taxable items as No Tax?  I am not sure if your Tax calculation is too high or too low.  Again not enough information from your initial statement.

@409995 ;

I just looked at my Sales tax figures for July.

Square is reporting I collected $588.66 in sales tax for July.

State Calculated I owe $588.45 for July.

      This 21 cent difference over a month could be a rounding error on half cents.

 .005 rounds up anything below .005 rounds down and one of these two could be rounding .005 to .01 and the other lets it at .00.

State also says if I paid early or on time I owe $582.57, so I pay early and know I collected enough to pay the sales tax even after the .21 cent difference between the two entities (Square and my States tax authority).

I sell through Square in Store retail and Wholesale.  I also sell Fudge (food) and T-Shirts (clothing) which are non taxable.  The Fudge and Clothing Items when I created then I marked them as Non Taxable in Square.  So my Gross and Net Sales tax are higher then what I put into my states Sales tax calculator for the Taxable Sales.  Square also shows this number in Reports > Taxes.

As I said before my online taxes are only collected for items shipped within PA.

So my suggestions for you are to check these things:

  1. Is your Tax settings correct for Taxable Items and Non Taxed items if you have any?
  2. When you are entering you numbers for your tax authority are you entering the correct number to them?  Gross Sales, Net Sales, Taxable Sales?  If I used Gross Sales or Net Sales to calculate my owed taxes instead of my Taxable sales number my collected and owed would be way off.
  3. Double check your items Library to see if an update changed your Tax settings.  I had this happen some of my non taxed Items switched on to tax an item that should have not been taxed.
