Feature Request: Accept only Debit Card at particular location

Hi,

 

We would love the ability to restrict customers to only use debit cards at a particular location.

The reason being, we would like to accept card payments to enter a raffle as so few people have cash these days. However, as a public raffle is technically a small lottery/gambling in the eyes of UK law, we are not allowed to accept credit including credit cards.

We could inform customers of the need for debit cards individually, but this wouldn't stop them using the wrong card and us to get in trouble.

This is a really great call-out - we don't have any settings that can limit the specific type of card accepted for any given transaction so thank you for filing this request and for the insight into how this would benefit you while using Square.

Hey @RaffleQuestion - in addition to the legal stand it’s also against Squares TOS so even if you advise it’s debit only there is still a risk of your account being closed.

Hi @Sam_400º

 

I thought it might fall foul of the TOS so I rang Square UK and they confirmed that for them a raffle wouldn't count as gambling and therefore we could go ahead and run a raffle through Square.

 

I think the US's TOS are a bit stricter in this regard.

@Sam_400º I now recall that this was the reason we were OK to and happy to proceed with the raffle last year. We haven't and will never be doing cash prizes.

@Breffni Thank you for letting us know and keeping us updated with any news.

Having the ability to restrict tickets to debit card only would help us enormously. The vast majority of people we have been trying to sell tickets to have wanted to pay by card, but we have to keep turning them down. I would estimate we've already lost nearly £400 of sales due to this, in less than a week. For a small charity like ours, this is quite a lot of sales to lose out on.
