Anyone else being harassed by square?

I’ve had multiple invoice payments be “withheld” and square asks me a ton of questions that they really have no right to ask. Anybody else experiencing this? Did you have a solution or is legal action for discrimination my only route (and no I do not want to have to go that route)

Square Champion

Hello @HometechLLC thanks for your post. I'm sorry you are having trouble receiving payments for your invoices. I have never had an issue with Square releasing payments for my business. Please know that there are certain regulatory/legal requirements for Square to be in compliance with processing credit card payments for businesses. Some of the rules are made by industry organizations, while others are laws made by the federal government. Square may ask merchants about their business in order to establish compliance with these laws. If you feel discriminated against or have a question about your Square account, you can contact customer service here.

Because you do not mention specific questions that you feel are unnecessary or discriminatory, I cannot comment as to their legality (to which I do not have a law degree anyway), but of course you always have the option to consult an attorney or business law consultant. There are alternatives to Square for merchant services if you would like to establish a relationship with another payment processor.

Best of luck to you and your business and I hope you're able to have a satisfactory resolution to this matter.

I appreciate your response. I do agree I should start up with a better card processor. The discrimination part is really based on the fact that you and many others (friends of mine) do not have these issues. I’m doing nothing illegal and square has access to ALL of my invoices. They could call my buyers if needed. All the information is there. But for them to ask about my relationship with the buyer and where I met them is not only irrelevant, but it’s a breach of privacy that not even the LAW has a right to know about. That’s where I stem my discrimination stance from. I could understand if I showed up to the square bank with thousands of dollars in cash as to why they are asking me about things. (Which still isn’t illegal btw)  But these are credit card transactions with taxes and I can’t run a business I just started if they keep withholding my payments just because “they want to understand my business better”. That’s a con and I’m not that naive. Most real companies would give me a call to understand my business…..not freeze my accounts.
