unfortunately square has stopped working

About 3 weeks ago I started getting an error message, "unfortunately square has stopped working".

I use a contactless chip reader connected to a Galaxy S4. I use my S21 Ultra for a mobile Hotspot.

The small card swiper plugged into the aux jack works fine. I only have issues with the contactless chip reader. I have reset my S4 to factory settings, updated software, and downloaded the latest version of Square. Still having the issue. Please help. Thank you.

Hi 🙂 I don't have experience in this myself but I did see another Seller with a similar problem and I think @Tom linked out to this article and it seems like it might be helpful to run through all of the steps. https://squareup.com/help/us/en/article/5673-square-contactless-and-chip-card-reader-troubleshooting... - There are also instructions for resetting the reader itself which might help if you already updated your phone and the Square app:

Reset your Reader

If you continue to have trouble with your reader after trying the above steps, you can reset your reader:

  1. Charge your reader for at least 20 minutes.

  2. While the reader is charging, use a small object like a bobby pin, pen cap, or paper clip to firmly press and hold the button on the reader for 20 seconds.

    • After 20 seconds, release the button and wait 10 seconds. Do not let go of the power button until after the red lights have stopped flashing.

    • Press the button again to turn the reader on and observe any lights on the reader.

If the reader lights turn on, you’re all set. If the lights don’t turn on, please try again. Make sure to firmly press and hold the reader’s button for a full 20 seconds. Do not let go of the power button until after the red lights have stopped flashing.

Thank you for going through these steps already @Pdxlemonade

It's possible that your Square Reader has been deactivated. There are physical security measures built into the Square reader to ensure you are protected from potential device tampering. Sometimes these security measures can be triggered by accident. When this happens, you can file a warranty claim via the Square Shop to receive a replacement.

Please let us know how you go!
