iPhone tap-to-pay stopped working

Hi. I’m new to Square.  The first few times I tapped-to-pay on my iPhone it worked great. Then it sometimes didn’t work and timed out.  Now it doesn’t ever work.  It won’t recognize any cards.   Any insights here?

Hi Mojos,

Suggest starting with Square's Tech Support as they may have some thoughts.

I've seen a few other posts whereas this particular function has been a bit unpredictable.  Note, the ability to take payments without any additional hardware is a great feature when it works.

Something to consider as an option - Square's contactless and chip reader works great (at least it has for us) - you can connect it to your smart phone via bluetooth.  It beats loosing a sale !  Note, it's an extra investment but, it's worth it.

This is deceiving.  It disconnects from Bluetooth all the time, and makes it hard if you have two employees working at once.

Hello,

I understand having your Contactless reader disconnect is frustrating. We have not had reports of this issue and want to make sure this gets resolved. Please see below some reasons it could be disconnecting:

Your Square Reader may have entered a low power state. To conserve battery, your Square Reader will automatically enter a low power state if it hasn’t taken a payment for awhile.

Square Reader for contactless and chip (1st generation) will go into a low power state and will remain connected to your device for 8 hours as long as Square Reader is within 10 feet of the device. Any interaction with Square Reader through Square Point of Sale will wake it up from this low power state. Square Reader will power off completely after 8 hours of inactivity. After this point, you will need to press the button on Square Reader to reconnect.

Square Reader for contactless and chip (2nd generation) will go into a low power state and will remain connected to your device for 30 days as long as Square Reader is within 10 feet of the device. Any interaction with Square Reader through Square Point of Sale will wake it up from this low power state. Square Reader will power off completely after 30 days of inactivity. After this point, you will need to press the button on Square Reader to reconnect.

  1. To turn on your Square Reader, press the button on your Square Reader once and wait a few seconds for it to reconnect. You should see one to four green lights flash depending on your Square Reader’s battery level.

  2. Close and reopen the Square app on your device.

  3. Update the Square app.

  4. Turn on Bluetooth from your device’s settings. For iOS devices, this can be found in Settings → Bluetooth. Try turning Bluetooth off and back on.

  5. Your Square Reader must be within 10 feet of your device. The Bluetooth connection may be out of range and could disconnect.

  6. Check that your Square Reader has adequate battery. Low battery may increase disconnections between your device and Square Reader. Press the button on your Square Reader once to see the battery level. If you see a blinking red light, that means your Square Reader battery is low and should be charged immediately. If your Square Reader is in a Dock for Square Reader, make sure your Square Reader is being charged.

  7. Restart your phone, tablet or other electronic device. You can also first try briefly putting your device into Airplane mode.

  8. Reset your Square Reader. Hold down the power button for approximately 20 seconds. The lights on your Square Reader will flash orange, then red, and then they will stop flashing. Do not let go of the power button until after the red lights have stopped flashing.

  9. If you are using the Dock for Square Reader (no longer for sale), bluetooth will automatically turn off when your Square Reader is in a Dock for Square Reader connected to a Square Stand by USB cable. Disconnect the USB cable from Square Stand or Dock for Square Reader and then attempt to pair.

  10. Move your Square Reader away from sources of Bluetooth interference such as microwave ovens, cordless phones, and fluorescent lights or using your Square Reader on a metal table.

  11. Clear your Bluetooth cache if you have an Android device.

  12. See Apple’s article on Bluetooth interference for additional information.

If you continue to have issues please reach out to support at 1-855-700-6000 or squ.re/contactsqsupport, so we can investigate this further and if needed file a ticket. Thanks for working with us on this!
