Unable to Login to Squareup Using Safari

Just in the past week or so I have been unable to login to Squareup using Safari. I get an error telling me to enter a valid email address. The email address is valid and works fine using Chrome. I am having the same problem using Safari on my iPhone. Called tech support and they told me to clear the cache and website data. I did that but it didn't work. Is anyone else having this problem? Can't be just me as I'm having the same problem on my Mac and iPhone.

Hey there @littlegrocery1.  Unfortunately, it still could just be you.  Here are a few other possibilities.

First, when you cleared the cache and website data, did you clear it for ALL apps and websites, or did you just select certain ones that looked like Square sites/apps?  If you didn’t clear the entire cache and website data library, this could indeed still be the problem.

Second, if you are using saved login credentials using the Apple Password app (which is new), I found that the migration from the old settings passwords to the new Passwords app caused a few issues with signing in to other websites.  So, I’d recommend writing down your email and password, then deleting it from the Passwords app.  Try signing in manually and type in the email and password.  Hopefully, it will be that easy and you can save them again for future use.

Lastly, if that doesn’t work, I’d recommend resetting your squareup.com password. If you do that, do NOT autofill your email address — type it in manually to be sure.  Hopefully it will recognize the email address and then allow you to save it with the newly generated password.

Was my post helpful? Take a moment to mark it as a possible "best answer." I hate the term, and wish we could just mark posts as "helpful." But this is our only mechanism at the moment. Just remember "Best answer" should be interpreted as "helpful," and nothing more. LOL. "Best" (ugh) answers help folks possibly find solutions to similar problems they are hoping to solve.

I'm afraid I tried all the things you suggest and still I can't login using Safari. I cleared the cache and all website data, updated Safari, reset my password. And I don't use the Password App or autofill. At this point I can't help but think this is something to do with Square and it's integration with Safari. I can't imagine I'm the only one having this problem. That just doesn't make any sense unless my login credentials are somehow corrupted. I'm using Chrome for now until Square gets this figured out. But I hate Chrome & anything Google so I'm not happy.

@littlegrocery1 Sorry to hear that.  I have one more suggestion.  Well, two more, really.  Both are what we call nuclear options.  Honestly, I strongly doubt that this is a problem with Square’s integration with Safari.  Squareup.com is just a web address for the Safari browser.  It works for me and I always use Safari — on Macs, iPads and iPhones.  So I know that it works just fine on Safari.

The real reason seems to be on your device, period.  And, more specifically, with Safari on your device.  If this were a system-wide Square problem, we’d be seeing a lot of traffic here about it, and we are not.

So, here are next steps.

  1. Delete the Safari app from your device completely.  Reboot your device and reinstall Safari.  Then, try to sign in again.  Hopefully, that works.
  2. If it doesn’t, I’m going to recommend to you factory reset your device.  Of course, first you will want to do appropriate backups so that you can restore your apps and data when you set your device back up.  This will take time and patience.  But this should fix any ghosts that exist on your device.

Already deleted and reinstalled Safari. I'm using an iMac desktop. Weird thing is I can't login on my iPhone either. It doesn't recognize my login credentials. So it can't just be my iMac. I think there's something wrong with my credentials with Square. Have spent too much time on the phone with them with no resolution. They just tell me to do all the things you are telling me to do, which I've already done. What I've learned with Square over the years is that these glitches seem to resolve themselves in time. So I'll just wait it out and use Chrome.

Hi there,

This’s happened to a safari on my iphone. Tried everything already but still on and off when I try logging in.

Anyone else having the same issue?

This has been happening to me on and off with no rhyme or reason for months, always on my Mac. I can always find a workaround, such as

  • using my iPad
  • using the Safari Technology Preview browser (I could use Chrome/Edge/Firefox/etc., but Safari Technology Preview feels most native and syncs History/tabs with regular Safari)
  • switching Profiles in Safari

None of these are great options. Switching Profiles is the least disruptive, but I only started using Safari Profiles recently. Not sure if it’s worth the hassle, but to the extent that I want to keep using it, then I’d want to always log in to Square with my “Work” identity!

The thing I’d expect to be the obvious workaround—quitting and relaunching Safari—doesn’t work reliably. Neither does removing Website Data from the Privacy Settings tab. Of course none of this should be necessary, but I’m not enough of a web developer to go digging into the JS debugger/console to try and figure out where this error message is coming from! Hopefully Square has devs actively investigating this, because it’s annoying and Safari is a perfectly decent browser, and the default on lots of users’ devices!

If y’all need any help tracking this down, let me know if there’s anything I can do in the Develop menu next time I encounter it!

This should absolutely not be marked as fixed, by the way. Still happens to me sporadically, so I have to switch profiles or browsers, or open in Private Browsing. Absolutely maddening, and I don’t see anything different in the JS console between a working and non-working window.

@TheParlour-Yoni Whoever marked it absolutely did not mark it as "fixed."  They only marked it as a best answer.  This board does not profess to mark issues as fixed or not.  And, all fellow sellers like me can do here is suggest things that have worked for us before.  That's all I did and I shared those thoughts because I figured they might help others.

Honestly, as an Apple fanboy from the very beginning -- and as a person who only uses Apple tech -- I've found this to have happened only two or three times over my 12-year tenure with Square.  Every time it did, it turned out to be an issue that was localized to my device(s) and/or Apple account.

Anyway, in order not to offend your sense of order in the universe, I unmarked my answer as a best answer.  I hope that is satisfactory to you.
