Price-embedded Barcodes on Register

Hi all

I'm revisiting an issue we have faced for a couple of years now.  We have CAS label printing scales.  The barcodes it produces (for item and weighted sales) scan perfectly on our original Square Stand.  Sadly the scanning experience on Register is hit and miss.  On Register, the exact same barcodes that scan on the Square Stand will either:

 - scan fine

 - not scan at all

 - (for item sales) not identify a quantity higher than 1 unit (leading to some missed sales!)

As it was a while since I last sought help for this issue, I have searched the Community and was delighted to find this article https://squareup.com/help/gb/en/article/7419-scanning-bar-codes-from-label-printing-scales-on-point-... .  Based on this, I've double checked all of our settings are correct and am happy that they are.  So I'm stuck as to what to try next!

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Hi @filletandbone,

I’m just following up on this for Breffni while she is out of office. Thanks for your patience while we investigated!

Our team has attempted to replicate the issues you reported, and believe the problems may relate to how your items are configured. The requirements for price embedded barcodes are specific to items sold by weight. So, the items will not scan correctly if they have not been set up to be sold by weight.

Could you confirm how the units are configured at an item level on your Dashboard? If they are currently set to be sold per item, could you let me know if the same issue occurs after adjusting this to weight?

Hi @filletandbone, thanks for flagging this and sorry to hear that you're having some trouble.

I did some research here, and I have an idea of what may be happening, but we would need some more details to confirm.

The Square Stand would be scanning barcodes on iOS, but the Register is an Android device, and there may be different barcode formatting logic. I saw a report with similar behaviour to what you have described.

Would you be able to share some examples of barcodes that you have experienced this with? I can bring it to our team for a closer investigation.

Hi @Breffni

Thanks very much for your swift reply.  Here's a pic of a few labels I have at the desk after recent testing / research.

All three barcodes scan perfectly on our Square Stand.  On Register:

- the Megrim doesn't scan at all (barcode not found)

- the Kofta scans perfectly

- the Sausages scans but brings up 1 pack (£6.75) not the 2 packs at £13.50

Hopefully the image is clear enough for you to see the information on the labels.  Let me know if you need any other info or more labels for other products.

Thanks!  Tom

Hi @filletandbone - so sorry that this one never came back to me 😔

Thank you for the examples - I'm going to bring them to the Retail team today to see if anyone can share some insight.

I'll be back when I have an update!

Hi @filletandbone thanks for your patience while we're looking into this.

Can you let me know if you are logged into Square for Retail on both the Stand and the Register? (The green app) - or are you sometimes working from the standard Point of Sale?

Hi @Sineaid

Thanks for following up while @Breffni is away.

I've tried your suggestion and changed unit items to weighted items and can confirm the scanning does now work on Register for all items.

However, the trade off is that the sale & receipt now shows 2kg etc instead of 2 items.  We've decided to stick as we are for now and muddle on, but do please let us know as and when Register has the same scanning capabilities as the Stand.  We remain hopeful for an update in due course.

Thanks again for looking into this!

Tom

Thanks for letting me know Tom, I’m glad I was able to shed a little light at least.

There are certainly discussions happening about the feasibility of removing constraints. While I wouldn’t be able to offer any insights into the likelihood of this being achievable, or provide any timelines, I’ll be more than happy to keep you posted here If I hear of any forthcoming updates that might be of benefit to you @filletandbone
