TN Unemployment Insurance

I am just confused if Square submits the payments or just the reports.  I got my state letter to file the quarterly, but I have entered the rate and all the info into the payroll system but I am just not 100% sure if i need to log into the state TNPAWS site to pay.  I just didn't want to pay it twice if square also sends it.

Hi @CColotti.  State UI payments and filings are part of the services that Square Payroll includes.  Here is a quote from the Square Payroll Tax Filings and Payments help document:

Square Payroll also files payroll taxes to state agencies, including state income taxes and state unemployment taxes (SUTA) where applicable.”

There is a link to Tennessee in that document that should help give you a complete overview of Square state services.

Ok, I’ll grant you that observation.  However I know from experience (4+ years on Square Payroll) that they file AND pay my UI taxes, just as they file AND pay all other taxes.  The only taxes that they neither file nor pay are usually local taxes, such as I have in Kentucky where Square calculates and deducts city and county taxes, but does NOT hold those each week.  In the case of UI taxes, like all other federal and state taxes, Square holds those funds rather than leaving them in our accounts to pay ourselves.

You can verify this by going to your most recent payroll on your dashboard > Team > Payroll > History.  Choose your most recent payroll and you’ll see a screen like the one I’ve included below.

If there is nothing in the Payments You’ll Handle section then Square is paying all taxes.  If Square is expecting you to pay a tax, it will not be deducted in your regular payroll and it will show up in the Payments You’ll Handle section.

I hope that clarifies things.
