The search subtly changed today. We are a liquor store that sells beer. Previously, I was able to search for an item and select the unit in the search. This was mostly for nonbarcoded beer. We sell most beer in 3 different units: 24pk, 4pk, or single. We use single as the default unit because it works the best for inventory purposes.
Now when we search for a nonbarcoded beer, it doesn't list all the units right in the search. It only has the single variation name. When I click on that it adds the default single unit. Everything would be ok here if there wasn't already another issue that I've brought up here before. When I click on the item to change the unit when it's entered as a single, I can't change it to any other unit except the single unit. If I try to add another unit a red remove button shows up.
So as a result, I can't enter these items in any way right now and this is big problem. I need to keep the default unit as single because of inventory and I have no way of entering the most used unit which is the 4pk.
Edit: forgot to mention I am using a square register. I don't have the firmware or the app version number. I'm not at the store right now

Ok I have an Idea for you Since the items do not have a Barcode make a SKU that is easy to lookup. You can create the SKU on a computer on your Squaredashboard through a web Browser at : https://app.squareup.com/dashboard/items/library
So below I have 3 SKUs filled in the top 2 are GTINs because that packaging comes with Barcodes, the case version I made up to place on the cases which is both numbers and letters.
Miller beers (for Example)
1 beer (single) have SKU 1-Miller
4pack have a SKU 4-Miller
24 case have SKU 24-Miller
then for Miller Lite have
1-Miller-Lite
4-Miller-lite
24-miller-lite
The SKU field can be numbers and letters I am not sure about the "-" tho. You can make the SKU up to 40 Characters I believe but I limited mine before to 30 because my accounting softwares limit for SKUs
That way when your at your Checkout you can Type in 1- and square will start Populating all SKUs that start with 1-; as you type the list gets smaller and smaller matching what you type. See if that helps you out.
The other thing you could do is Print your own SKU on each non barcoded Item..... which could be alot of manual work. I use Square for Retail and any item with no SKU, I can have Square generate a SKU to be printed as a Barcode to place on items. here is more about generating SKU's : 7632-auto-generate-skus-with-square-for-retail
The other thing you could do is in a notebook by the register Group beers without the barcodes and place the SKU in there to type in instead of the Barcode. SKUs generated by Square are 7 characters long which is less than typing in 24millerlite for example. I have a Sheet of Barcodes by my registers that are used for items with no barcodes or items that are too small for barcodes. For example I have a Barcode for my mix and match votives. Since the person grabs a Blank bottom there is no barcode to scan. Customer comes to a checkout, I scan the barcode for Mix and Match Dozen Votives. I have about 36 of these barcodes on one sheet of paper. I used larger 2D QR codes instead of the 1 dimensional code 128 barcodes.
I know this may not be ideal but it should at least help you out untill a better method comes along.
Cool thanks for the tip.
