Incomplete GTIN / UPC info on scan into Square for Retail

Good morning. We are having issues when creating new inventory items in our Retail POS. We scan the GTIN / UPC barcodes. Square finds the code and fills in the item name, but not much else. I run the same GTIN through a master database at https://www.barcodelookup.com/191190835807 and it gives me tons of information on the GTIN. I need that information to come through with my scan into Square Retail. How do we make that happen?

FYI, we have thousands of other items that we need to get into our Retail POS. Please help. Thanks.

Hello there @TSSworkwear and welcome to the Seller Community

My recommendation would be to reach out to our Square for Retail support team, so they can take a closer look at your experience, and identify if there is anything needed to improve the way GTIN information is imported.

They can be reached at 855-700-6000 between 6 am - 6 pm Pacific Time Monday-Friday.

You can also get in touch with our Messaging and Email Support Teams here.

@TSSworkwear ;

What information are you trying to pull into Square?

I foloowed your link to Barcodelookup and did find you can Scan a Barcode in one at a time through them or you can upload a barcode dataset as a spreadsheet to auto populate their data for a fee.  They also have an API that can work if you know more about that or have people that know how to program an API.

From using the Square Auto populate from a GTIN I have found either the Data is wrong or Square pulls in the Name and can also pull in the Description but not the Manufacturer or the cost you paid etc.  This is why I am asking what data you are trying to have Square Lookup from the GTIN.  Plus it may give Squares team more information on what they can improve on.

Yes, we have the ability to make the API call(s) to get the data, although we assumed Square would be doing this for us(!). Once we have the data, how do we make it accessible for our inventory tracking team to access those datasets within the Square for Retail POS?

In this Forum somewhere there are other users that complain about Square and the Auto GTIN look up not matching or finding the item they are adding.  This could be why Square has not added all the Details you are looking for.

Since this is another Product getting the API, You may have to get the data from the other site as a csv and figure out which Information you need to Upload to Square, Item Name, Description, Vendor etc.  You can then use an Excel XLookup function and make a CSV of your entire catalog to import to Square.  I am not sure how Squares GTIN lookup works as I am not a programmer, but have used out side sources then added the information I need to my Square Catalog by using either X-lookup or Power Query in excel to build a csv that I can upload to Square with the information I want.   Square from what I gather only imports the Item name and maybe a Description of the Item if you choose that option from the Square Dashboard.

I would suggest making the API calls and exporting these calls to a CSV file on your own.

As I mentioned before that Square pulls the wrong Details from their database at times Square users have asked Square to either Turn this Off or Fix It.  The Issue is some people pay for actual GTIN numbers and some create a SKU which appears as a GTIN creating to the confusion possibly.

I just would do this myself since Squares GTIN Auto Create for Barcode 07[Redacted] of a Dr Thunder Can of Soda gave me this result:

Item Name :  Face Your Fun

Description :

Face Your Fun is a collection of 10 vibrant and playful shades that will bring out your inner creativity. With names like "Don't Stop Your Heart," "Sunset," and "Blow It (Away)," this palette is perfect for those who love to experiment with bold and colorful looks. Whether you're going for a fun and flirty daytime look or a bold and dramatic evening look, Face Your Fun has the perfect shade for every occasion. The high-quality formula ensures long-lasting wear and easy blending, so you can create endless eye-catching looks. Let your imagination run wild and Face Your Fun with this exciting eyeshadow palette.

So if you have a better source that gets the details you Want or need I would use that as right now it seems Square auto Generate Feature from a GTIN is either wrong or may not get your details that you require.

The Link you provided before gave me the correct information for the same barcode but no Description:

Once your API pulls the Data Set as a CSV file use Excels Power Query to Merge your Square Catalog and your API csv files.  If Barcode in Square Matches the barcode in your API pull enter column for Manufacturer, Category.... etc.  Save the csv with the correct Square Catalog Headings which can also be set in Power Query than save as a csv or xlxs file then Upload the new file to Square.  Just make sure that the Item in Square also merged to the correct Token of the Item.

Just keep a Backup of your Square Catalog incase things do not go into Square as you thought, so you can upload the Original Square Catalog and fix it to the Before doing this.

Square lets you Import and Export your catalog to update the information you require.
