Handheld POS Scanner for Square Register
Thought I would lend a helping hand for users looking for a handheld scanner specifically for the Square Register. After wearing one out I struggled finding one that works correctly. They all "worked" but not well.
As an example, when I pull the trigger 4x I want that one item in the system, 4 times. I especially don't want to click into the item block before pulling the trigger. Both the ScanAvenger Wireless Portable 1D&2D with stand bluetooth barcode scanner and the NetumScan Wireless 1D 2D Automatic Scanners had these problems. They worked right out of the box; they are just clunky, requiring too many steps to use.
My very old Honeywell MS9540 USB handheld scanner works perfectly but I wanted a wireless one so I went with the NADAMOO Model BUR3003. This is the 2nd one I've owned, and it also works perfectly right out of the box.
Good luck with this, I hope you read this before you buy something.

I purchased Zebra (Honeywell) DS2208 USB scanners, found they worked well. Then I tried DS6878 USB to base. Base to handheld wirelessly. These also worked great for the Square Stands. I had the USB scanner but hated the cable being in the way etc, so I upgraded to the USB to Wireless hand held DS6878 scanner. Gives you a Wireless Handheld with connection of USB you may want to look at similar type scanners. As you can see in the video as I scan neither Scanner has a Cable attached to the Scanner itself. I tried connecting the DS6878 to Square by Bluetooth and not USB. I then learned I had to Tap Search, Scan Item, Then Tap the Item to have it ad to the Cart. Went back to just using the USB connection. I am wondering if the Scanners you are trying are not fully compatible or if it is a Hardware/Software problem with the Register or Square programming in general.
The DS6878 is USB and Bluetooth compatible so it is not the Scanner. The steps to connect it to Square by Bluetooth are not straight forward for the Ipad and through Bluetooth with Square on an Ipad seems to work more as you described. The Bluetooth DS6878 does not even show as a connected Scanners, but the USB one does.
I attached a short video showing the USB to Cradle connection for the Square Stand and the differenve when my Portable Ipad is connected by Bluetooth.
USB connection - Scan item and it is added to cart
Bluetooth Connection - Tap Search Scan Item, Tap Item to add to cart.
USB - 1 step pull Scanner trigger, Pull Trigger again and it ads 2 of that item
Bluetooth - 3 steps to add 1 Item to the Cart. Then tap the Item in the cart and Tap to add quantity to cart.
Attached is a video showing the difference between my Square Stand using USB (Setup on the Right) and my portable Ipad using Bluetooth (Ipad in Black Case). Square only supports Bluetooth with Socket 7 Devices which could be the issue with My portable Ipad needing extra steps.
Currently I have:
- 2 USB DS2208 wired scanners for Desktop / Notebook applications and backups for Stands ( model LS2208 for 1D Scanning only)
- 2 USB/Bluetooth DS6878 usb to Cradle or Bluetooth direct
- bought all 4 of these Refurbished in Sept 2019 from Amazon
The DS from Zebra / Honeywell just means they can scan 1D or 2D barcodes. As you see my Jar candles use a 2D barcode in the video for space savings on my labels.
