Buy 1 get 1

I have entered my discount for a buy 5 get 1 free. It works great. It takes off the least expensive item. However, when a customer buys lets says 12, it should be taking the two least expensive items off and so on but it is not. It takes one of cheapest items off but then a random item. I've even tried taking that discount off the more expensive item and tried putting it on a cheaper item, but that doesn't work either since it reverts back. This to me is a huge glitch in the system and one that needs to be fixed ASAP as this is crucial to my business!

I use the Bakers Dozen discount.... Buy 12 Get 1 Free on our 28oz Candles.  What I have done is set it up that the discount only applies to that size candle, and the 1 Free is only for that size Candle.  So maybe if you would setup your discount that when you buy 5 of that category you get 1 free from that category not from any item.  So my Discount applies to 28oz Jar candles but does not go towards our Triple layers or our Aromatherapy candles.  My Categories are 28oz, Aromatherapy, and Triple Layers.  Just an idea to help you limit what the discount can be used for or applied to.

That is how I have it set up. I am a greenhouse. Its a buy 5 get 1 free on hostas. The problem is each hosta is a different price. We have over 300 different types. As I mentioned. When someone gets 6 it works great, but many times someone will buy 3-4 trays (24 hostas). In the case with 24, they would get 4 free, it should be 4 of the cheapest for free, but 1 is the cheapest but the rest is just random ones. A hosta can be as cheap at $12.00 or as much as $60.00. I shouldn't be giving away a $60.00 hosta unless they are all 60.00.

Now I understand better, I did not understand from your original post that the Items were all of the same category.  Since you have such a big price swing in your Hosta Prices, you could setup categories of $10 increments.  $10 to $20 Hosta's; $20-$30 Hosta's, $30-40 Hosta's .....etc.... then for your Free ones you could put only from category $10-$20 etc for example.

You could also make more discounts that if they buy 5 from the $50-$60 range they could get any from all the Hosta categories..... buy 5 from the $30-$40 range discount (free one) only applies to $30-$40..$20-$30 and $10-$20 categories for example   this way it stops you giving away a $60 Hosta when people buy 5 of the $25 Hostas for example.

The other thing you can do which I did for my Punch cards is make a manual discount for a free $10-$20, Free $20-$30 etc when people buy 1 of each category and you want to offer them a lower priced one for free that does not automatically apply.

These are just some quick work arounds till Square can get a better way to do discounts to lower priced options since their Discount Rule (circled in red in image) states it applies to the Lower cost item!  If you zoom in above the Red circle it states you can add multiple items or categories which is where if the person buys 5  $20-$30 Hostas, you could add categories of $10-$20 Hostas and $20-$30 Hostas categories to keep people from getting the $60 one for free.  I know this is not perfect or what you want but could limit your losses.

Thanks for the options, but with that many items, it seems pretty tedious. I think I am better off not adding any discount at all and just manually take off until Square can get this figured out. It shouldn't be that difficult.
