Can the Square Terminal work without an internet connection?

I bought a Square Terminal recently and noticed that I need to be connected to the internet in order to log onto the device. I was under the impression that the terminal would work offline. What if I'm in an area where there is no internet connection? Can I still take payments? If so, how do I even log into the device without an internet connection?
