Legal Name Changes for ownership

Y'all....it is 2024. I have just navigated the DMV and SSA with court documents and have changed my license and social security card. Square is a bank. Banks change information given by identity and court order. Keep up. It is ridiculous that I can change my payroll name only and not the name on my account. My business is an S-corp so it isn't impacting business info but my team name cannot be updated. I don't want the drama and potential loss of features from participating in the Super Sellers nor the headache of transfer from me to me .... Surely y'all have the ability to process these changes...I tried to reply to an older thread but it has been archived. Filing this under anti-LGBTQ and specifically anti-trans business practices.

PREACH PREACH PREACH!

The way things are setup now for a name change does affect payroll and it's not a smooth process. You have to call in to even complete the task and it's so clunky. It really shouldn't be this hard.

I have been married 6 years and square is literally the only place I haven't changed my name.

It is clunky....and should not be this hard 😞 - would love to chat about this more for sure and advocate for anyone needing a change - marriage, divorce, change in ownership, name changes - it really should be something you can change so there isn't a loss of important data or a lot of work creating a new account to transfer things over.

Status changed to: Open

Hey @MudFire_Dex! Thank you so much for submitting this Feature Request! I've updated it to the "Open" status. This step in the Feature Request process will be a time in which other sellers can add their use cases to your idea to make it stronger and demonstrate further how much it is needed. Later on, we'll re-visit the most popular feature requests in the "Open for Votes" status and bring them to product teams.

To other sellers that see this feature, please “like” the post and reply with a use case that your business would have. This will help to signal that this feature request is even more important to address.

Thank you @JJ_ I have seen a lot of users point out a lot of situations:
* change in ownership
* divorce or marriage
* buying a business partner out and needing to add or remove an owner
* changing your name with a court order (as in my case)

I will try to tag some folks from other conversations below.

Hey y'all @JJ_ has asked that the feature request for name changes be open again and needs y'all to reply to this post and put the reason for your needed change "use case" I'm taking some of y'all from older threads:

@kellymichelle I saw an old archived post from you on this topic as well

I just recently got married and reached out to square to change my name on my account. They told me they could not do this even though I have my marriage certificate. I was told I would have to start a whole new account with the new name which I do not want to do since I would lose all my data. This really should be fixed for the future.

I was married over 6 years ago, changed my last name, and learned that I couldn't change the name on my account. I wasn't yet using Square payroll so thankfully I just made a second team profile with my legal name for payroll purposes. I don't have a relationship with my biological father, who's last name is my maiden name. I was so happy to change it when I got married that it kinda bums me out every now and then to see it.

There's so many instances of name changes due to marriage, divorce, gender confirmation, etc. that this should be a feature. Maybe not a super easy thing to do, but at least a possibility. Other than just starting a new account.

I changed my name in 2013 and have asked several times about changing my name. But no, they can't do that. My name is correct with SSA, my driver's license, all of my other banks, and even on my birth certificate. But Square won't change the spelling of my first name. For years it wasn't a big deal because you never saw it. Now it shows all the time. And I would really like to not see it everywhere thank you.
Square

Hello, Square offers the ability to update the account holder's legal name on their account. The transfer of account process, which can be completed through Dashboard allows you to update your name. It's possible if you very recently updated your name, that the verification systems to verify your identity aren't updated yet and you may receive an error but this process was created for all the scenarios folks have outlined above.

More more info on how to start the transfer of account process, take a look at this support article: https://squareup.com/help/us/en/article/7675

For those using Square Payroll, you can still do this process but you would need to contact Support at 1-855-700-6000
