I keep having issues where an item being created in Square, and then further modified in the online shop:
Where a 'regular' item had been created in Square, and then Variations being created in OnlineShop and the original 'regular' item is being deleted in Online shop, this seems to freak out the database, to the point that item doesn't want to synchronize anymore; Sometimes it takes a few hours for changes to become visible in the 'other' location.
To the point that, even after deleting all items in both areas, and recreating them, the system reacts still sluggish and unpredictable.
When creating an item from scratch and putting it online, it can take many hours to become visible, even when the Direct Shopping Cart link is working, the item sometimes cannot be searched and found in the online shop item database.
Item can also not be searched and found in the connected FB/Insta shop for the same reason.

If you make changes to variations the other way around (eg on the Square Dashboard rather than Online dash) are you seeing the same issues?
I have heard that optimally you'll want to make changes via Square Dashboard, then only use the Online dash for things that cannot be managed via the main one (eg fulfillment method, additional photos).
If you are able to, could you experiment with making changes on the Square Dashboard end and let me know if you see an improvement here? Additionally, I recommend filing support ticket for more advice from our team.
I also agree with your suggestion - manual ways to verify syncs would be ideal! I'll pass this feedback on to our product team!
