Telstra blocking my website

Seems all telstra customers can't view my website. Access denied blah blah blah. Usual problem for squareup customers. Half of australia is unable to view squareup websites because square is disinterested in solving the problem and telstra is more interested in referring you back to square. Absolute joke. If I'd known how useless square websites were I would have used godaddy.

Hi @cheaptrailers

Thank you for reaching out to us. I’m sorry to hear about the difficulties you're experiencing with your website being blocked.

I completely understand how frustrating this situation can be. Unfortunately, this issue stems from Telstra's detection systems, and resolving it requires direct action on their part. While we wish we could resolve this from our end, false positive flagging like this is not something Square can directly address.

We've had previous reports from other Sellers who faced similar challenges with Telstra blocking their sites. Although these cases may sound similar to yours, it's important to note that false positive flags occur on an individual basis. They can affect various website hosts and are triggered by different internet service providers, antivirus software systems, and malware detectors. Each situation is unique, and resolving it requires direct engagement with the service providers involved.

Here’s what I recommend to help address this issue:

Report to Telstra

Begin by filing a misuse of service report with Telstra. You can do this here. When prompted with "What would you like to report?", choose "Request blocked website or domain removal."

Check for False Positives with Other Providers

I came across a Shopify Community Thread where users shared similar experiences with Telstra. The thread offers some valuable recommendations for addressing situations like these. One suggested approach is to use a trusted search tool like VirusTotal to scan your site URL. This can help determine if other detection software is mistakenly flagging your site as malicious. If any flags are identified, you can report them directly to the respective services for resolution.

Sorry I couldn't provide more direct assistance. If you have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Hi. Thank you for your input. Unfortunately according to Telstra the information you provided isn't accurate. Please note Telstra's insistence this issue is directly related to poor security on Square sites. I maintain my position that Square isn't doing enough to work with Telstra to fix this issue for its users. As such it's misleading for Square to not disclose this information to its subscribers.

Hi Mark,

Thank you for reporting this issue to us.

We will work with our security product vendors to investigate why this domain has a poor security reputation, and, if appropriate, arrange for a review of the current restrictions.

Please note that if our security partners (or others) deem the domain as a significant security risk, the restrictions will remain in place.

Also note Telstra can not provide any updates on this process, and you will not hear from us further.

Potential review can take some time, and we encourage you to attempt to access the domain yourself to determine accessibility.

Please continue reading to understand how you may able to facilitate access more rapidly.

Telstra's Network Protection capability only applies to Telstra network connections, and is intended to reduce the chances that our customers will encounter verified malicious content such as phishing scams which can steal personal information, or sites known to be involved with computer viruses (malware).

The only way to reduce any restrictions which may be on the domain is for the owner of the domain to work directly with the organisations which have flagged the domain as suspicious or malicious.

Telstra is not one of those organisations, and in no way can we assist with this process.

Importantly, you should know that the website and Internet domain in question has been independently evaluated by multiple reliable security companies to have a potentially poor security reputation.

This assessment is made by anti-virus companies and other Internet security organisations which find malicious or harmful content online and create lists of the location of this harmful content to protect their users and customers.

What this means is that even if Telstra's security product vendors review the domain in question, many other companies may continue to view it as holding suspicious or malicious content, which will continue to impact the availability of the site well outside of Telstra's network.

The owner of the domain or website must work with their own IT experts to review and improve the reputation score themselves; Telstra can not do this - only the owner of the domain can remediate this issue.

This is also the fastest way to resolve any issues, as only the owner of the domain can attest to their own security controls.

Again, Telstra has no direct control over the domain reputation process, which is why it is essential that qualified technical experts responsible for the domain work directly with the IT security companies which have marked it as having malicious or harmful content.

This malicious content may be present without the awareness or knowledge of the legitimate domain owner, as sometimes criminals can compromise a domain or a website to upload malware, phishing scams, and so on, without consent.

If you have any level of administrative control or access to the domain (or website), we would urge you to work with your preferred IT experts to review the site in question and ensure it is free from any (perhaps unknown) malicious content.

More information regarding the specific risks of this domain can be found at:

https://virustotal.com/gui/domain/cheaptrailers.net

Until such time as all security vendors at VirusTotal agree that the domain is "clean", access restrictions may continue to be applied.

Telstra will not be able to assist further with this matter.

It will require the owner of the domain to work with the companies listed at the link above - as those are the organisations which are marking the domain as malicious.

With kind regards,

Telstra Cyber Security

Sorry for the delay getting back to you here, @cheaptrailers.

According to the VirusTotal assessment provided by Telstra, six companies have flagged your site for phishing or malicious content. As the domain owner, I recommend reaching out to these companies directly to report the false positives. They'll be able to follow up with you if they have any questions or need further information. I've provided the relevant contact and submission links below for your convenience:

Telstra has partnered with Fortinet and Sophos in the past, so I suggest contacting them first. While the other companies aren't specifically noted as Telstra partners publicly, they may still be part of the broader ecosystem Telstra uses for threat detection and management.

If you have any further questions or need additional assistance, please get in touch.

Hey @cheaptrailers exactly the same thing happened to my Square store this week... its taken me all week wasting time with Square and my domain provider to get to the point where I've found the same 6 web security firms had blacklisted me. I spent a couple of hours filling out their false positive contact forms this afternoon. I've got the list down to 2 so far. Fingers crossed I might sell something next week. Really wish Square would add this to their problem solving "script" most frustrating week of my life. I feel for you, hope your problem got resolved.

I feel your pain. Being shrugged off by square and told not our problem is nothing short of disingenuous.

Having said that since I followed the above advice and tediously reached out to each blacklist, the site seems to be mostly unblocked now and traffic has improved. Hopefully it works for you.

Again though if I'd known this was a common issue I wouldve designed a site elsewhere.
