Create Discount Codes that mirror how they were in Square Online

I was told to create a feature request for this, however I do feel like this is more of a bug than a feature request as the discount behavior I'm "requesting" has been the norm in Square Online couponing.

For years and years (four) we have used coupon code to take a discount of the customers entire purchase. We have created the discount on eligible categories and selected ALL categories except one (events/classes).

For the purpose of our website and business, our events/classes are listed as products/items and not through appointments (we just don't love the integration at this time).

Recently, we've noticed that customers have been placing orders using the discount codes that should give them 15% off their entire order only to see that they're receiving 15% off the highest priced item.

Of course, because we advertise the discount as off the entire order, we then need to refund them the rest of the discount, which we have been doing which led us to try and figure out what changed.

We know that coupons will be moving to Square Marketing in august.... but it seems that they are already taking precedence over the online coupons.

When I reached out in community about this- I was told this behavior was "expected".

I'm confused as to why we wouldn't just mirror the coupons as they have always worked especially since coupons were just supposed to be "moved" not "changed" as it was explained to me.

My issue is we have easily $2,,000 worth of marketing materials that state "take 15% off your entire purchase" which not are useless.

We send between 50-100 of these postcards out with our orders daily.

Please fix ASAP.

Re: Create Discount Codes that mirror how they were in Square Online

Hi everyone - Apologies for the slow follow-up. I can confirm that engineering teams have started work to add an "apply coupon to all eligible items in the cart" option for Marketing item and category coupons, which when enabled will make these coupons work the same way they did with Square Online coupons. Timelines can always change, but we hope to have this option available by the end of March. Thank you all for your patience.

@BradenSQ It has been a month since your post saying that the coupons would be fixed "in the near future." Can you give us a ballpark of what that means? Are we talking a matter of weeks? Months? We run sales in February to make room for spring merchandise. What are the chances that we'll be able to discount entire categories by then? Or more than one color?

We need to know in order to make business decisions going forward. Thank you.

Hi everyone, thank you for your patience and continued feedback. I'm still working with our partner team to nail down a more precise timeline, but right now we're considering the "coupon applies more than once per order" option to be a high priority for Q1. In other words, it's not a sure thing yet, but I'm pretty confident that it'll be available before the end of March, and I'm hopeful it'll be January / February. I should have a better sense in 2 weeks.

I think that's likely all true for an "edit coupon" option as well, though we're treating the "apply more than once" option as more urgent.

@BradenSQ

Thank you for that update! It is very much appreciated. I will try to be patient.

@BradenSQ this is good news. We ran the coupon on total purchase and of course people snuck item into the cart they weren't supposed to.. so being able to limit couponing is extremely important.

Any update on the timing @BradenSQ @Square ? Every time I think about how this coupon change was implemented during the busiest time of year - and how totally divorced from the reality of how businesses use coupons, I get a frustrated and start to consider other options. So the sooner it's fixed the better.

@DinaLRosenberg I totally agree with the comments made here and 'bang on' when talking about customer trust, once lost its a fighting battle to regain, plus a load of time and effort to rebuild.

I feel we have received some great new functionality with the transition to Square Marketing but at the same time have also lost some important marketing tools and functionality compared with the old Square Online coupon system.

It would be nice to see some of the lost functionality return.

Square Champion

@doc_choc honestly- I don't know why it is taking so long to create a robust coupon offering, especially as we've had that ability before

@DinaLRosenberg its frustrating I know. Continual development by Square of the marketing functionality of the system is really important for any company using Square. It really does help drive sales when its done well and unfortunately when there is a little change it can sometimes have super big consequence down the track for business for example financially from printed collateral material and a customer confidence when the functionality doesn't work.

It would be great if Square could set up a working group to drive forward functionality that we business owners know would help our businesses and ultimately drive revenue for Square.
