Create Discount Codes that mirror how they were in Square Online

I was told to create a feature request for this, however I do feel like this is more of a bug than a feature request as the discount behavior I'm "requesting" has been the norm in Square Online couponing.

For years and years (four) we have used coupon code to take a discount of the customers entire purchase. We have created the discount on eligible categories and selected ALL categories except one (events/classes).

For the purpose of our website and business, our events/classes are listed as products/items and not through appointments (we just don't love the integration at this time).

Recently, we've noticed that customers have been placing orders using the discount codes that should give them 15% off their entire order only to see that they're receiving 15% off the highest priced item.

Of course, because we advertise the discount as off the entire order, we then need to refund them the rest of the discount, which we have been doing which led us to try and figure out what changed.

We know that coupons will be moving to Square Marketing in august.... but it seems that they are already taking precedence over the online coupons.

When I reached out in community about this- I was told this behavior was "expected".

I'm confused as to why we wouldn't just mirror the coupons as they have always worked especially since coupons were just supposed to be "moved" not "changed" as it was explained to me.

My issue is we have easily $2,,000 worth of marketing materials that state "take 15% off your entire purchase" which not are useless.

We send between 50-100 of these postcards out with our orders daily.

Please fix ASAP.

Re: Create Discount Codes that mirror how they were in Square Online

Hi everyone - Apologies for the slow follow-up. I can confirm that engineering teams have started work to add an "apply coupon to all eligible items in the cart" option for Marketing item and category coupons, which when enabled will make these coupons work the same way they did with Square Online coupons. Timelines can always change, but we hope to have this option available by the end of March. Thank you all for your patience.

@BradenSQ Thanks for the update. I wanted to echo what others have expressed in the thread: that the removal of this feature was not well (or at all) communicated to Square customers, and the feature needs to be brought back immediately, as it is creating a lot of confusion for our customers and difficulties for us in processing discounts and refunds. I hope the March timeline is correct, but we'll be looking for alternatives in the meantime, as this is a crucial feature for us.

Any update?? It's well into March.

It is extremely frustrating this hasn't been addressed.

We just tried to run a sale because the shop was closed due to a blizzard, but even a discount on an entire category of items was only discounting ONE item in the cart. That is SO USELESS. We ended up manually entering a sale price for about 15 items -- such a PITA! Square, please, please fix this.

Frankly, this is one of the things that causes me to think (and occasionally say to people who are looking for advice about POS systems) that Square does not care about retailers. They do not try to make our lives easier or our jobs more efficient. Even when we are screaming at them about issues that eat up our time and injure our customer relationships, where is their response?

I wish there were better alternatives and that the cost of switching (in both time and money) were not so high. It would make me very happy to see signs that their attitude was changing and that they were starting to prioritize our needs, but I'm not holding my breath.

@BradenSQ It's April. Is there an update?

Chiming in because I would like to see this fixed as we have a category that cannot be discounted, therefore can’t use the blanket “entire cart” option. I also need the ability to apply a discount to all items in cart that belong to certain categories. Even greater flexibility is a “do” or “do not” belong option as well as “entire cart” or “X items” as selection criteria when creating the code.

This is absolutely ridiculous this hasn't been fixed yet. We are now into May and nothing has changed. **bleep** poor customer service. We will be Switching POS systems at the end of this quarter enough is enough!!!

@BradenSQ I absolutely agree. Square has ruined its credibility and reputation in my book. It is now May and we haven't heard anything since we were told Square was aiming to have it fixed by March. There should at least be communication, if not actual progress.

This is one of the first stories I tell people when they ask me if they should use or switch to Square for the business. It illustrates the problem very well.  I really don't understand why they are aren't being more responsive, not to mention why they made such a stupid change in the first place. I mean, I suppose we got an explanation -- something about it "not being possible" with some new software or merger or something -- but why did they think it was okay to take away this functionality? They should not have flipped the switch until they had this working properly. And if for some reason that was not an option, they should have warned us about the change instead of just saying some coupons would "act a little differently." What a joke.

If Square really wanted to provide a good service for retailers I could give them lots of advice about what they need to change. After 14 months of using it, however, I'm sadly concluding that they don't give a **bleep** as long as they can keep replacing the users who leave with new ones.

I would LOVE to be proven wrong about this, btw.

What are you all switching to? I'd like to hear from other users who also need this feature for their businesses. Thanks!

Hi folks - Thank you for your patience. I definitely understand why the long delay (and gaps in communication) have been frustrating. Fortunately, I'm happy to say that the old Square Online coupon behavior is now finally available as an option in Marketing coupons, as of earlier this week. If you create a new Marketing coupon and pick either Category or Specific Item under "Applies to," once you pick one of your items from the list you will see the choice between "Apply to the highest-value item in cart across all selected items" and "Apply discount every time one of the selected items is added in cart" (or the Category equivalents of these). The first option is how Marketing coupons have typically worked (and will continue to be the default selection), and the second option should match how these coupons used to work for Square Online.

Please check it out and let me know if you run into any issues. And again, I'm sorry that this took (way) too long to add. Sometimes with software, seemingly small features like this can end up getting stuck because some other big change has to be finished first, which was part of the delay here. We could have done better on the communication front in the meantime though. We hope you all stick with us, despite the frustration here!
