We're easing into the Square Loyalty. I'm looking for the smartest/most creative incentives for our customers that will reward them without hurting us. We're thinking a tiered program - $ amount off after a certain amount is reached. (We sell clothing and gifts)
There are innumerous ways to establish your approach. I'll share the specifics of ours, in hopes it is helpful or inspires some thought for an approach appropriate for your shop and goals.
We've structured our program in a simple way. Three basic goals:
I'm a firm believer in having a solid pulse (roughly) on your P&L, specifically know your net profit as a company, possibly for certain categories, maybe even specific items. These will help incentivize with across-the-board measures, a category, or specific things you want to promote or reward customers based on defined behavior.
Knowing we run at 15% profit before discretionary giving and management choices that terrorize typical profit goals. I wanted to provide at least the same reward to customers. So, recognizing not all customers will join loyalty and not all loyalty rewards will be redeemed, I chose $5 back after 5 visits above $6 each. This, a theoretical 17% reward, provided a minimum of $30 in spending over 5 visits (100% of the time, it is more than $30 over each of those 5 visits) and a $5 reward making it quickly achievable. At the time, we had a $4.15 average ticket.
It had an immediate impact and long-term impact on average tickets. It resulted in more visits and made the regulars feel rewarded. Score, Score, Score! We use automated reminders when loyalty members are approaching a reward and send lapsed reminders when they haven't returned in a while. These marketing campaigns help keep us on the minds of both loyalty and non-loyalty customers.
Thanks so much for taking the time to respond. I appreciate you sharing what works best for you!
Our rewards system is set up to do $5 off for every $50 they spend. It's super competitive (maybe not a 17% off) because none of our competitors offer a rewards program AND our prices are set to be below both Party City and Amazon which are the two largest competitors we deal with.
I'm hoping they eventually allow us to offer double "points" for certain categories so that I can run my clearance program through rewards. Currently if I discount I get hit on the front end (50% off seasonal after the holiday is over for example), running it through a rewards program would mean they pay full price and get 50% to spend towards their next visit.
I've noticed people either care deeply about rewards or they don't care at all! It's kind of funny because I have a sweet old lady buying one card at a time get super excited about her rewards.
Check average is currently sitting at Loyalty spending $57.74 and Non-loyalty spending $41.17
It's a bit lower because we're in the slow season (people buy more cards or small items like bubbles over the summer) but I expect it to increase drastically during the Holiday season.
Awesome ideas! Thanks so much for taking the idea to respond.
