Hey Square Retailers! 👋
We're a retail clothing shop and use Square for Retail for everything.
We're slowly organizing our inventory to launch our online store and need your help with something: how you name your items!
We've been doing it differently across our team, and now we need one simple way to name products that works for both our physical store and our website.
---
The tricky part is that the same item name shows up in two very different places:
In-Store (Receipts & Register): Names need to be short so they don't look messy or too long on the paper receipt.
Online (Website & Google Search): Names need to be descriptive and rich with keywords (SEO) so customers can easily find them when they search online.
Right now, our idea is to use: Brand + Product Name + Key Feature.
Example: Dickies Original 874® Work Pants
This is okay, but we wanted to check in with the community for suggestions!
---
For those of you running both a physical store and an e-commerce site on Square, how do you handle this balancing act?
What is your item name structure? (Do you use codes, abbreviations, etc.?)
What's the maximum length you recommend for the primary item name to keep receipts clean?
Do you use the other fields in the Square Item Library (like the full description or SEO fields) to boost your online search results, while keeping the main item name short?
Any advice on creating a structure that's SEO-friendly but also works great on a small receipt would be super helpful! Thanks! ☀️
Dickies Original 874® Work Pants is OK, I'd probably add to it: Dickies Original 874® Men's Work Pants, Dickies Original 874® Women's Work Pants, etc.
Absolutely use the description & SEO fields - that's going to improve your online results.
Appreciate the input @androo !
We'll make a note to include any gender specific information for the names as well.
Thanks again!
Hi
retail fashion store here online and physical
not sure why you think the full name can’t appear on a paper receipt. It can. Get the receipt printer square sells. Square receipts look good
for your info we use Brand name + item name
example Stan Ray Washed OF Crew Green
works well in all formats.
you can’t use codes or truncated because it wouldn’t work well on the website.
one of the benefits of square is your inventory updates your website seamlessly. So write it in full. It’s fine.
Appreciate the info @SCA_Fashion !
Apologies for the confusion about the receipts. We'll edit the post since we do have the Receipt Printers Square recommends for the Square Registers. We do see the full names on the receipts we print out
Our main point was to have names that were optimized for Online sales, while also being decent in length for printing on receipts.
Thanks again for your input and experience!
This is my square website
That is how the item appears on the POS and de facto the website. We print in full
don’t forget however for the website you get a very large space to write description. When you import items into square also there are SEO fields you can populate
