Why is my Square Reader not working and only flashing red lights?

My 2nd gen Square reader is about three years old. I used it periodically for about a year while working events, then put it in storage for about two years. It's been kept safe and dry in its case in a storage bin. I have my first event of the year next weekend and got it out to charge, and it won't charge.

Even after it being plugged in for an hour, clicking on the power button does nothing--no lights at all. I tried the 20-second reset and it did nothing too--no lights, no change. When I plug the reader in it goes through a cycle of double flashing red lights, then a pause, then it does it again. I've tried different outlets, different cables, etc. No difference, no charge, no lights when it's not plugged in.

I think I'll have to replace this reader, which is obviously annoying since it's not that old. I'm mostly posting here to let others know I'm having an issue. It looks like I'm not the only one from other posts I've seen, but those posts are closed without any solutions, just the canned response to reset the reader. Yeah, tried that repeatedly, it doesn't work.

Hello, @Tigerbattails

This is a lamentable situation. Thank you for providing the details of the troubleshooting steps you have completed. I still recommend taking a look at our troubleshooting guide to make sure all boxes are ticked before buying a new reader. Electronic devices can fail at any given time, and we do our best to make sure we can catch these one-off events quicker rather than later. Our warranty covers defective devices within the first year of purchase.

If you want to confirm if your reader is within warranty, you can check this page here.
