Why is it that we can’t change the account holder’s name?

I’ve tried off and on again seeing if Square ever made it possible to update/change the name on the account. I got married 4 years ago and now my last name is different. I’ve tried contacting support, and there’s just no way to do it. I’d imagine this would be an important option to have, right?

I’m honestly just concerned because I just opened a checking account with Square, and my maiden name was populated in the name section, and it wasn’t able to be changed. I don’t know if having a debit card in my maiden name would cause issues since it doesn’t match my ID.

I also noticed that my old address populated in the address part of the application. Thankfully, I was able to change that in the form, but I can’t seem to find it in my account settings to update.

Please help ☹️

Hi @Nephilimstudios  No one here in the community of sellers knows why this is. But, unfortunately, it is the case and there is nothing we can do to help or give a workaround. I, and many others, have posted about this over the years. But as of the date I post this no one — not even Square support staff — can make the change you are asking for on your account.

since you said that your only concern was the debit card, you should know that there is a beta test going on to allow multiple debit cards (presumably with different staff names) for our accounts. Here’s the link to join that beta test.

I’m  also going to tag a couple of admins for that beta so that they can tell you whether or not this would address your issue. @Marco @nika

I was told that I had to open a new account if I wanted a name change. I think its ridiculous that Square won’t allow for this change and am beyond frustrated with their complete lack of concern with addressing this issue.

You don't need to! Just transfer the business to your new self! You will need a new email for sign in purposes, though.

It looks like Square does not make it easy on female small business owners to succeed.  I need to change my name as well.  99 percent of the time a woman changes her name in marriage.  The woman has to go through the trouble to change the drivers license, passport, bank accounts, etc.  If I need to start a new square account, perhaps I just change the company I use completely?  Do you have any recommendations?  I think other options are Stripe or Chase for Business?

Hello! I have figured it out! You need to go into Account settings. Click on Business Information, then About My Business. Under there, you will see the option to transfer business. Technically, that is what you are doing.  Make sure you have already updated your social security card, as your number is attached to your new name.  The only thing is, it will require you to use a new email for sign in purposes.  Everything else should be good, because that is your legal name. Reuse your correct birthdate, social security number, and address, etc.  I hope this works for you!
