What is the benefit of purchasing the dock for the chip reader?

What is the benefit of purchasing the dock for the chip reader? And does the chip reader plug in by power cord or USB cord?

Holds it at an angle.  I just velcroed mine to the counter.  It comes with a micro USB to USB A connector,  This can be plugged into a phone charger brick, the square stand or computer.
