Way to block items from being discounted?

We have certain items that I would like to prevent from being discounted at checkout.  We have a very, very tight margin on newspapers, for example.  It is very convenient for my staff to apply a total discount for a sale but I'd like the discount to skip over certain items. 

I would like to prevent the cashier from DOUBLE discounting things-- sometimes they apply a "manager sale" to one item and then apply a family discount to the entire sale and the item gets double discounted. 

These little features need to get a little smarter.  ...Unless they are smart and I just missed a detail in set up.  Let me know if I've missed something!  Thanks

Thanks for writing in with this question! While more than one discount can be added to a sale, you can restrict discounts being applied by following these steps:

1. Sign in to your Dashboard.
2. Navigate to the Items > scroll down to Discounts.
3. Click on a discount > scroll to Advanced settings toggle Passcode Required on.
4. Click Save.

The owner passcode would have to be entered to allow the discount being applied when this is turned on.

It would be great if we could just specify certain items or categories that are not applicable for a discount.  Requiring a passcode does not solve the problem because the owner may not always be in the store (especially for businesses with multiple locations) and also because the majority of items are ok for the discount and only a very small subset that we would like to block from getting the discount.
