Using an adaptor and a card swiper??

I have a card swiper that connects to my phone but want to use square on my iPad so I got an adaptor that allows me to plug into the iPad and then plug the swiper into the adaptor, but it’s not picking up on it and saying I have nothing inserted. I have also never used square on my iPad so I don’t know if I forgot to do something or if this simply won’t work. Please help!!
