Hello,
We are a touring event and have predominantly operated in the US. We already have an account based in the US and devices that work in the US. We now have a tour date in Canada and wondered what is needed in order to take payments on-site at the event in Canada.
From my reading online it seems that a separate account would need to be created using the Canadian bank account. It's not clear if the devices we are currently using in the US could be attached to this new Canada account and used to take payments in Canada. Can someone please clarify?
Hi @mnisbet, welcome to the Community 👋.
I'd be happy to clarify these points.
Since cross-border card payments are unsupported, you would indeed need to open a Canadian Square account to be able to process payments in this country.
However, note that you either need to be a legal resident of Canada or a Canadian citizen to sign up, and you will be asked to provide a Canadian home address. We outline the information required to open a Canadian account on this support article. You may also find more information on the Payment Terms of the Canadian Square website.
In terms of hardware, it can only be used in the country where it was originally purchased. If you intend to process card payments in Canada, you'll need purchase hardware on the Canadian Square Shop. We explain International Availability in more details on our Support Center here.
I hope this helps - but feel free to let me know if you have any other questions 🙂.

Would Virtual Terminal work in this situation?
Hi @tonydow!
When accepting card payments with Online Checkout Links, the Virtual Terminal or the Square app, you need to be located within the country where you activated your Square account. Unfortunately, card transactions attempted while traveling or residing internationally can’t be processed.
