Using Ethernet Order Printer without a router.

We ordered a Square Register and a Star Kitchen Impact Printer.

The printer needs to actually be plugged in to a router on the same wifi network as your register (not sure why it cannot just plug directly in to the register but hey ho).

I don't have access to the router where I set up so was going to send it back but then tried a workaround which worked fine and thought I would share it with anyone else having this issue.

I plugged it in to a wireless range extender and it worked. I used the TP-Link below but I am sure any will work.

It’s a good way to add a wired device to a wireless network (star also have their own printer powered version) - but be a little wary of this sort of setup as it’s not as bulletproof as a ‘standard’ sort of thing.

Not sure what model printer you have bit most have swappable cards on the back & a USB card can be picked up on eBay for less than a tenner for most models (You’d still have the network card in a draw if you ever wanted to swap back).

Star do have one Wi-fi model that’s ‘OK’ - but their new printers are a lot nicer (the MC Print line) & offer a range of connection options all on one device (although Wi-fi isn’t one of them).

My ‘go to’ printer is the Epson TM-M30 series, specifically the Wi-fi one as that has USB, Ethernet & Bluetooth along with it’s well configured Wi-fi dongle.

Thanks for the info, I will look in to the swappable interfaces. I have a Star printer (the only order printer Square sell).

Ah, I think they use the standard definition of kitchen printer - so one that uses a ribbon right? (ones that aren’t as effected by moisture or heat)

If you’re still within your return window it might be worth reconsidering you options again, again. (Not that the printer you have won’t kick ass - just that with the pizza joint the compromise made for the kitchen aspect might not be needed)

It looks like it will work with wifi extender so hope to keep it.

Were you able to use the printer on the wifi extender network without having to have your terminal on the same wifi extender network? My kitchen printer is aways from the Router so an ethernet cable is out of the question (for now, until we can get one installed).

I've managed to get the printer to work with the wifi extender but it won't connect unless the Square terminal is on the same network. Ideally I'd prefer my terminal to be on the original router network and the printer to use the wifi extenders ethernet network, but I'm not 100% sure whether this is possible.

TIA.
