Tap to pay stopped functioning

Since updating my iPhone to iOS 26.4 I have been Unable to process transactions, using tap to pay on the iPhone.

Everything seems normal, I hit tap to pay everything looks right… Customer taps card. Phone dings as if it’s processing the transaction… And then the screen just returns to the prior view without processing anything.

no error code nothing. Just as if I never tried to do tap to pay

now. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the app. I have Deli deliberately from the App Store updated the app. I have reset the tap to pay options in settings on the Square app. I have reconnected my Apple ID. Restarted the app multiple times restarted the phone multiple times.

Nothing seems to change the fact that the app has simply decided to just not function beyond reading the card when it’s tapped and then blanking back to the transaction without actually processing anything at all. Prior to the update everything worked seamlessly.

I’m having the same issue!! My only solution is to manually type the card info in each time I check someone out.

I can use the slider card reader. I’m glad I at least have that so it’s not costing extra!

I'm sorry you're experiencing this issue @JeremyBake @Jillyann05 and @Kam0922!

From looking into this, it appears that there is currently a known-issue with using Tap to Pay specifically when the device is running iOS 26.4. This is currently being investigate by Apple and we don't have a fix as of right now.

Some of the workaround Apple has recommended to us:

  • Signout of iCloud and sign back in (Settings -> Apple ID -> Sign Out, then sign back in)
  • Turn off device passcode and re-enable it (Setting -> Face ID & Passcode -> Turn Passcode Off, then re-enable)
  • The last resort is to restore to factory settings. if you are attempting this step, we recommend to back up your device first.

Alternatively, if you have a physical Square Card Reader, you can also pair it with your device and attempt to take payments that way.

If you are NOT on iOS 26.4 but are still experiencing an issue with taking Tap to Pay, please let me know:

  • A screenshot of the error message you are getting
  • The iOS version you are using
  • The Square app version you are using

If you are not using an Apple device but are experiencing an issue with taking Tap to Pay, please let me know:

  • A screenshot of the error message you are getting
  • The device you are using
  • The operating system current running on your device
  • The Square app version you are using

Hey @JeremyBake @Kam0922 @Jillyann05!

It looks like there is a new iOS update — 26.4.1 — and another Community member @MtlPkch has confirmed that updating to this has resolved the issue they were experiencing with Tap to Pay.

When folks have a moment, please try updating to the latest iOS software version.

If you are still experiencing an issue after updating, please share the following information with me in a reply in this thread

  • A screenshot of the error message you are getting
  • The device you are using (iPhone 12, etc.)
  • The Square app version you are using
