Tap To Pay - iPhone Using PIN

I've had it where it declines or says 'Use Another Card' but from reading apples info it seems that the customer should be able to use their PIN with a contactless payment if they've gone over their threshold etc.

Can someone explain how it actually works and if you can do everything with just your phone?

Using PIN entry to authorise transactions

PIN entry, available in iOS 16.0 or later, allows the payer to enter their PIN on the merchant’s device to authorise the transaction. The PIN entry screen may be triggered immediately after the tap based on the information exchanged with the payment card. Alternatively, the Payment Service Provider can trigger the PIN screen by providing a signed Token, which is valid for one transaction only.

Thanks for posting @Sam_400º  !

Have you seen this happen with Google Wallet as well ? The error message "Use another card" usually means that the card-issuing bank declined the payment. There are a couple of reasons why this may happen:

  • insufficient funds,
  • the card has reached the maximum number of allowed contactless uses,
  • the customer has not inserted their card and use the pin for some time (the bank would decline the payment as a security mechanism).

From personal experience, I know you can be requested to add your pin number when using your digital wallet. However, I believe this is down to the bank you're with or the card used.

If this happen again, I'd ask your customer to insert the physical card, or contact their bank directly to see if they can get more information about the decline.

I hope this helps 🙂.

Hey @Lou8

It's with the idea of only using a phone for taking payments - no other hardware.

The apple FAQ stuff (quoted above) seems to suggest that we should be able to do tap and pin in the latter two of those situations. This is kinda my big question!
