Square stands

I have been with square for 10 years now.  We started with our phones while we were starting out.  We transiti9ned over to square stands for the older generation ipads.  We went away from the stands in 2023 as they were not accomidating for the new ipads, and they often had issues with the power supply.   So in 2023 we began rebuilding our POS system with the new ipad 9th Generation and the square stand (now called a kiosk).  Between 2023 and now, we have added 8 new 9th generation ipads and have 6 stands.  I called this morning to order more stands, and low and behold I am told that Square no longer makes a stand for the ipad 9th generation. I have $8000 tied up in cellular ipads, and $1500 in hardware and mounts for the stands.  This is a slap on the face by square, I cant believe they would drop support for a current generation of hardware that they recomended a couple months ago.  No warning, just gone.

@BothwellFarms ;

The 9th Generation Ipad has a Lightening Port for recharging, where as Now new Ipads have a USB C port for charging.

You state "This is a slap on the face by square, I cant believe they would drop support for a current generation of hardware that they recomended a couple months ago.  No warning, just gone."  When Square started releasing the New Generation of Stands that gave emails I believe and were posting ads for it.  The Specs did say they were Not compatible with the 9th Generation Ipad which is 1 of the reasons why I never Upgraded to a new stand.  So the ads for the New Stand would have been a warning plus I remember getting emails for limited supply of earlier Stands for 9th Gen Ipads which would have been another warning.  So you are currently short 2, (the Gen compatible stands?  Could you check Ebay to see if other Square users might be selling the older stands because of Upgrading to newer Ipads?  I am actually amazed if your last stand order was a few months ago Square still had Stands compatible with the 9th Gen Ipad. SInce you ordered new Stands "Between 2023 and now, we have added 8 new 9th generation ipads and have 6 stands." I think you just picked a Bad time to start to Upgrade in 2023, according to this search for when Ipads changed from Lightening to USB-C ports.

When did the iPad switch to USB-C?

The iPad began its transition to USB-C in October 2018 with the release of the iPad Pro models, replacing the Lightning connector. Over time, other iPad models followed suit:

2020: The iPad Air (4th generation) switched to USB-C.

2021: The iPad Mini (6th generation) adopted USB-C.

2022: The standard iPad (10th generation) transitioned to USB-C.

This change was more so thanks to the European Union in 2022:

  • 2022:
    The European Union passed legislation mandating a common charger (USB-C) for all smartphones by the end of 2024.
    The standard iPad (10th generation) transitioned to USB-C.  Mini's started in 2018 using USB C

  • 2023:
    Apple announced the iPhone 15 lineup, which included the USB-C port, marking the official end of Lightning on iPhones.

As for Kiosk Vs Stand.... Square sells both.  The stand has a base and raises the Ipad at more of an angle then the Kiosk which can be mounted on a Wall or other Kiosk Holder.

I went with the iPad 9th generation iPads because square only offered the square stand (now called the kiosk) for that size iPad.  I require iPads because my business operates at numerous locations where I need cellular.  The contactless chip reader works, but goes off line often.  The old stand with the hub worked, but with daily assembly and disassembly the wires didn’t last long.  The stand was a perfect option, except for the fact that the lightning port is the only thing holding in 1/2 of the iPad and was prone to breaking with repeated insertion/removal cycles.  I actually recommended having a replaceable lightning port.  The stand (kiosk) connects to charge and provide contactless & chip reading capabilities and works well.  Power can come from the supplied usb-c cable or I have used usb-c battery packs when power was not available.
