Square making me open another account -

So when COVID hit I stopped using Square Payroll. Now that I want to use it again they told me I had to start another account. So, I did. One account to run my business and all my historical data and 1 account just for payroll. BUT, they are saying that my State Tax ID and Employment Commission ID are being used on the old account and that I need to file for all new Tax ID's. I have 4 trouble tickets out and no response. It's been a month now. I am not being told that my old account that I am running my business under needs to be deleted to get the new account to recognize my tax ID's and I will lose everything!!! There has to be another way. This is ridiculous and with technology these days it shouldn't be this hard. Does anybody have any insight or help they can provide? I can't lose everything!!!

Hi @VBDeli.  Unfortunately, you are in a catch-22 here.  Square’s help documents for payroll subscriptions state that once you close your payroll account, you will never be able to re-open it.  Also, when you closed it, they displayed a couple of warnings to this effect, which recommended that you pause the account rather than close it if there was any chance you’d want to use Square Payroll again.

I don’t know what the issues are, but that’s how it is.  Whether or not you or I think that they should be able to do what you want, the fact is that they don’t and I don’t see any plans on the horizon to change that.  So for now you will have to either get new payroll tax IDs with the feds and the state and possibly your county/city, or you will have to use another payroll processor.

I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

But, they are telling me I have to delete the entire square account? They literally can't remove the tax ID's? And, they closed the account when I called them I did not do it myself. I was never informed I would not be able to use it again. I have had nothing but problems and can't seem to get to a person that can understand how to help me. They told me to open a different account to use just the payroll part of it, which I did and now that I am going to lose everything from 2018 til now?

Ah.  I missed that you had talked to someone on the phone who closed your payroll account for you.  If I had known that, I wouldn’t have posted any of that at all.  Unfortunately, I can’t help you nor do I know a way around this.  Hopefully someone from Square can weigh in here.  But my suspicion is that if you want to keep your transaction and other account history intact, you are going to have to process payroll with someone else.  Square has a third-party App Store here, where you can search for payroll processors who connect to your Square account.  That’s about all the advice I can give you.  I’m sorry.
