Square for Restaurant - item list background image size?

I am setting up a Square for Restaurant account and I'm on the appearance/customisation stage.

I am uploading a background image for my menu/item list but the resolution looks very low (blurry image) when I view it on mobile, and still quite blurry when I preview it on desktop. I am currently uploading a 1080x1920px PNG at 72dpi. I have tried larger sized images which look even worse.

What is the optimum size for the item list background image to avoid this happening?

Thanks

Hey @toonsi, welcome to the Seller Community!

Before I dive into this, can you let me know if the background image is for your iPad or for your website? This will help determine the optimal size for the image.

Hi @tranguyen, this is for the website, but I'd also be interested in the optimal size for the iPad too for future reference.

Thanks

Thanks for letting me know @toonsi!

For your website background images, there isn't actually a definite answer (which isn't a great answer, I know!) but generally, a good rule of thumb is to use an image that's around 2000 pixels wide and at least 1000 pixels high, making the image large enough to look good at full width on any screen size. We also published a guide recently on how to make your background images work on different screens as well.

One thing to note (and this can affect the quality of the image as well) is that we need to handle millions of images from a large user base. This mean the system isn't design around large, uncompressed, high-quality image since we need to make sure our system can handle the demand. As such, you might see the image being compressed.

For your Point of Sale background image, we recommend using either a PNG or JPG file that is 2328 pixels by 1144 pixels. Larger files will produce the best results as long as they are under 500kb.

I hope this will help somewhat!

I keep getting this message when trying to save the background image, it is so frustrating! I have saved it many times over as a JPEG and a PNG, any help would be appreciated:

Profile image should have content type image/jpeg, image/pjpeg, image/png, image/x-png, image/gif

Hey @Judy7, thanks for flagging this. Wishing a warm welcome to the Seller Community also, as I can see that this is your first post here with us!

Would you be able to share a screenshot of the error message that you are receiving when trying to upload this image? This will help me in my investigation.

Thanks.

No worries, thank you for trying, @Judy7

Are you trying to upload the image for your website or your Point of Sale app? If you scroll further down you can see Tra has provided some guidance on what image specifications, such as dimensions, should be when uploading images.

Additionally, it sounds like you may be signed in as a team member. Could you try logging out of the account and make sure you are signed in using the parent email of the account? If you have team permissions turned on, its possible that you may have signed in as a team member that has limited access to the account.

If this issue persists, I'd recommend calling our Customer Success team on 0800 098 8008. We’re available by phone from Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. They would have better visibility of your account and will be well-equipped at troubleshooting the issue here.

Let me know how you get on with the above!
